Ode to my city (Anna Rahilkina)

I want to fall asleep.
I want to fall into the arms of sweet slumber
until I see you again.
Until the day that I sit on a plane
and rise into the sky rushing towards you.
I will return.
And with the turn of countless days
I cannot wait until I gaze at
The surface of your soft mossy curves,
The crescent moon of your mysterious smile,
The lingering golden rays that your soul emits on the evenings and
the rustle of the glossy leaves of your hair.
The memory of your inebriating smell spreading through my body,
I can nearly sense it.
A droplet of salt gathering in the corner of my eye.
I never want to let go.
I never want to stop discovering the endless highways, avenues, streets and lanes, windowpanes and porches of your unspotted mind.
I never want to have to leave you again.

This poem was written for the author’s hometown, Almaty, after her emigration to a different country.
