Winter in Almaty (Anna Rahilkina)

Photo gallery by staff contributor Anna Rakhilkina

Almaty, city in the South-East of Kazakhstan. The blend of all cultures, traditions and customs of the post-Soviet world. What is Almaty during winter? Green grass peeking through snow. People, wrapping themselves in several coats, but not wearing a hat. People sit on balconies, watching the street, while the radio is talking about unbearable snow storms in the faraway capital of the country. Each balcony has their own golden light coming through the lacy curtains. Each balcony carries its warmth preserved in jars from the past hot dry summer. The people open the jars with sunshine and mix the red sweet liquid with warm tea. They drink it, chatting about everyday worries and dreaming of the coming of Spring.
