Inside the MTR

The MTR (Mass Transit Railway) is my safe spot in Hong Kong. I like to watch people get on the train and get off again at their destination. There’s a rhythmic flow in the footsteps and periodic announcement of the next stations. From Kennedy Town to Chai Wan, I’ve ridden this crowded train for the entirety of its trip multiple times. I’ve discovered something new to love about it every single time. There’s a duality in Hong Kong—it’s a finance central, but also a quaint fishing harbour—that makes it quaint. It’s easy to fall into anonymity between this duality. I think it’s this reassuring feeling, this shield from responsibility, this freedom that I can’t get enough on. The MTR itself is a place of change and liminality. It’s like the heart of clockwork. I like to sit on its gears and watch the world tick.
